Liberty
And Freedom!
Jesus
went to Nazareth, where He had grown up, and on the Sabbath
day He went to the synagogue, "and He was handed the
book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book,
He found the place where it was written:
"The
Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed;
to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
"Then
He closed the book and - sat down." (1)
This
was Christ's mission. It had been proclaimed by Isaiah over
600 years before Jesus' birth. (2) Isaiah goes on to say,
"To comfort all who mourn,..
to give them beauty for ashes,
the oil of joy for mourning,
the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
that they may be called trees of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified."
(3)
Then
Jesus said to those who believed Him, "If you abide in
my word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free
If the Son
makes you free, you shall be free indeed." (4)
