THE
UNSEARCHABLE
"Although
I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was
given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches
of Christ" (Ephesians 3:8, NIV).
To the
apostle Paul, Jesus does not only possess unsearchable riches,
He is Himself unsearchable. The untraceable wealth of divine
grace and glory is concisely summed up in the living person
of Jesus.
The Greek
word translated, unsearchable, is also rendered "inscrutable,"
"untraceable," or "that which transcends human
thought." The word is used twice in the New Testament,
both times by Paul (see Romans 11:33; Ephesians 3:8). The
vast spiritual bounties of Christ can be comprehended only
in part, because "we see through a glass, darkly"
(1 Corinthians 13:12). The unsearchable riches we enjoy in
our unsearchable Saviour are not unsearchable because they
are inaccessible or remote, but because they are superabundant.
Christ's sufficiency can never be exhausted; there is always
more to come. All His redeeming activities for the human race
are unsearchable.
All the
accumulated wealth of Fort Knox, the gold mines of the world,
and the fabulous wealth of all earth's millionaires are only
as a drop of water in the vast ocean of the riches of God's
redeeming grace. The resources of Christ are inexhaustible!
The good news is that they are fully available to all those
who come to Christ in faith. Before us is an eternity to comprehend
more and more of Christ's unsearchable riches. "There
are unsearchable riches for us. It will take us all eternity
to comprehend the riches of the glory of God and of Jesus
Christ."--That I May Know Him, p. 7.
My
Prayer Today: Lord, I claim anew the unsearchable
riches of Christ, my Saviour. Amen.
