THE
GENTLE SHEPHERD
"He
tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his
arms and carries them close to his heart; He gently leads
those that have young" (Isaiah 40:11, NIV).
The portrait
of Christ as the Gentle Shepherd presents another facet of
the Good Shepherd. Through this title, He is seen as a gentle,
caring, and solicitous shepherd who is always available to
provide His flock with protection, security, and safety.
The depth
and magnitude of our Saviour's infinite love, tenderness,
and solicitous watch-care are beautifully expressed in the
words: "He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries
them close to His heart" (Isaiah 40:11, NIV). What an
exquisite and fitting picture of Christ, our wonderful shepherd!
Patiently and tenderly, He leads His people through all the
vicissitudes of life. "He carries them close to His heart."
There can be no safer place to be than near to the heart of
the One who loved us and gave Himself for us (see Galatians
2:20). All the activities of the Gentle Shepherd are actions
of gracious solicitude.
Just
as a loving shepherd gathers his lambs, carries those that
are too feeble to walk, and leads the ewes gently to safety--so
Christ, our Gentle Shepherd, exercises every possible care
for His people. Our wonderful shepherd is the very embodiment
of consideration. Here's an important comment on the Gentle
Shepherd: "Compare the Good Shepherd, who gave His life
for His sheep, with those who are filled with self-esteem,
puffed up, dictatorial, loving to rule in the church. The
prophets have specified Christ's attributes. They foretold
Him as a Gentle Shepherd, who would carry the lambs in His
bosom."--Manuscript 176, 1898.
My
Prayer Today: Lord, lead me gently home, for without
You, I cannot find my way. Amen.
