THE
ONE FAIRER THAN MEN
"You
are fairer than the sons of men; grace is poured upon Your
lips; therefore God has blessed You forever" (Psalm 45:2,
NKJV).
In prophetic
vision the psalmist eulogizes Jesus as "fairer than the
sons of men" (Psalm 45:2, NKJV). In the NIV, this verse
describes Jesus as "the most excellent of men and your
lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed
you forever" (Psalm 45:2, NIV). How appropriately this
glowing eulogy describes the excellence of Jesus! This portrayal
presents our Saviour "as a man, as a warrior, as a ruler,
and finally as a bridegroom on the wedding day."--SDA
Bible Commentary, vol. 3, p. 741. In all these roles and functions,
He is the noblest of the noble, the fairest of the fair, the
greatest of the great.
As a
man, Jesus was "fairer than the sons of men" (Psalm
45:2, NKJV). He was peerless and matchless. He was fair because
of the beauty of His character, the loveliness of His attributes,
the charm of His personality, and the holiness of His life.
As a
warrior, Jesus is the mightiest of all. He is the unconquerable
warrior who goes out conquering and to conquer (see Revelation
6:2). As a ruler, He is the supreme King of kings. As a bridegroom,
He is the most endearing in all the world. He gave Himself
for His bride, the church (see Ephesians 5:25-27). Every sinner
saved by grace will heartily concur with David in his eulogy
of Jesus. Indeed, our wonderful Lord is the "most excellent
of men" (Psalm 45:2, NIV). "Jesus Christ, the Majesty
of heaven, was not discerned in the disguise of humanity.
He was the divine teacher sent from God, the glorious treasure
given to humanity. He was fairer than the sons of men."--The
Youth's Instructor, August 22, 1895.
My
Prayer Today: Lord, with the psalmist, I magnify
Jesus as "Fairer than the sons of men." Amen.
