THE
MIGHTY GOD
"And
His name will be called... Mighty God" (Isaiah 9:6, NKJV).
Of all
the glorious messianic titles Isaiah attributes to Christ,
this one makes the greatest claim to omnipotence. Jesus is
more than Wonderful; He is more than the peerless Counselor.
He is also the "Mighty God."
The words,
mighty, and almighty, are descriptive of omnipotence. As the
Son of God, Jesus shares the title "Mighty God"
with the Father. In every sense, Jesus is the God who is inherently
mighty. As one with the eternal Father, He is in every sense
God (see John 1:1; 14:9). He is the mighty God who is Creator
and sustainer as well as Redeemer and Lord of all (see Hebrews
1:3). Isaiah repeatedly refers to Jesus as "the Mighty
One of Israel" (Isaiah 30:29, NKJV).
As the
Almighty God, Jesus raised the dead, expelled demons, healed
the sick, cleansed the lepers, and astonished the world with
amazing miracles. As the "Mighty God," He declared
"I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25,
NKJV). It is by this same power that Jesus transforms wretched
sinners into victorious saints. Jesus is mighty to save and
strong to deliver! He is mighty to save, mighty to keep, and
mighty to preserve and perfect His people for His glorious
appearing. "Then let us talk of the power of Jesus; for
help has been laid upon One that is mighty. Isaiah says that
'His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty
God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.' So let
us elevate our souls through faith in Christ above the lowlands
of earth, and breathe the atmosphere of heaven."--Review
and Herald, March 1, 1892.
My
Prayer Today: Lord, as the "Mighty God,"
You are mighty to save and strong to deliver. Amen.
