Portraits of Jesus

Today's Meditation
Knowing and
Experiencing God

I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

It was Christ's last supper with His disciples and he was preparing them for what was soon to happen. He was sharing vital truths with them that they would in turn report on and share with us.

"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know."

Thomas did not understand and said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?"

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (1)

Christ's focus here is on how we come into relationship with the Father. "No one comes to the Father except through Me." Jesus is returning to the Father's home, He was sent by the Father to reconcile mankind to the Father (Col. 1:19, 20), He came to reveal the truth about God to us (John 14:28); His declaration is that He came from the Father, He has completed the work the Father assigned for Him to do (John 17:4), and now He is returning to the Father. Why is this so important to us?

We live in a very chaotic world; confusion, heartache and terror is all about us. Is there a better way? Yes, Jesus is saying there is a better way, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." What is the meaning of this?

God is Truth! Jesus also said, "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." (2) It is through a correct understanding of the Word of God that we come to know the truth and we are liberated by the truth. "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (3)

In Christ's confrontation with the "devil" in the wilderness, He said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' " (4) Why is it so important for us to live by the word of God? Could it be that the only way that we can understand the confusion that is taking place all around us on earth is through an understanding of what the Bible has to say to us? We are informed that "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete." (5) We are also given to understand that "There is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding." (6)

So the Bible tells us plainly that the Word of God is truth, it is truth that will liberate us, we are to live by every word that God shares with us, and that God shares His "breath" (His Spirit) to give us understanding.

Since we were created by God in the beginning, does it not make sense that our very life comes from Him. "God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (7)

Jesus is the way to the Father's heart, He shares the love of the Father and the truth of the Father with us, and He not only gave us life originally, He sustains our life and is the only source of the eternal life that comes from the Father. (8)

We have the freedom to choose what we will believe. I for one believe that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, and that God loved us so very much that "He gave us His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." (9)
