Whatever
He Says to You, Do it!
"There
was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus
was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to
the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of
Jesus said to Him, 'They have no wine.' Jesus said to her,
'Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour
has not yet come.' His mother said to the servants, 'Whatever
He says to you, do it.'
"Now
there were six water pots of stone nearby, according to the
manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty
gallons each. Jesus said to them, 'Fill the water pots with
water.' And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to
them, 'Draw some out now and take it to the master of the
feast.' And they took it. When the master of the feast had
tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where
it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew),
the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to
him, 'Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and
when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have
kept the good wine until now.' " (1)
It's
interesting in this story that Mary did not debate with Jesus
whether it was His time or not. She simply turned to the servers
and said, "Whatever He says to you, do it!" Mary
didn't know what Jesus would do, but Mary knew her son. She
knew that He had a way of solving people's problems and she
was not disappointed at the wedding festival. Mary's advice,
"Whatever He says to you, do it!" is excellent advice
for us today.
Whatever
God asks us to do is for our benefit. Why do so many people
not understand this? For instance, Jesus has asked us to love
one another as He has loved us. (2) Jesus loves us with a
pure love, a love that does not take advantage of us, or of
our neighbor. If everyone loved one another as our Creator
has shared His love with us, what a different world this would
be. We would not be in a war because of terror!
Our Creator
has asked of us to not commit murder, adultery, steal, lie,
cheat or covet anything that belongs to our neighbor. (3)
If we have the love of God in our hearts, we would not do
anything that would offend our neighbor.
Our Creator
has also asked of us to recognize Him for who He is and not
ignore Him, nor make any likeness of anything that He has
created, or worship anything other than the One who created
us in the beginning. We are not to take His name in vain or
swear using His name. He also requests us to give honor to
our parents as we would not exist without them. In the same
way, we would not exist without Him. (4)
He also
gives us a very special day of rest every week to remember
our roots and to come apart from our labors. We are not to
do any work on this special day. It is to be spent with our
families and loved ones and to remember the One who has made
everything good available to us. (5)
In relationship
with our Creator, all the stresses of life fade away. He is
the One who loves us "with an everlasting love."
(6) He is the One who heals us." (7) We cannot comprehend
all the many blessings that He shares with us daily.
The blessings
and benefits of life are more fully realized the more that
we trust Him and do what He tells us to do. If we ignore Him,
the troubles of life are multiplied. His biddings are enabling
and they are for our benefit and blessing. David testified
to the goodness and blessings of the Lord when he said, "Oh,
taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who
trusts Him." (8)
"Whatever
He says to you, do it" is good advice, because whatever
He tells us to do is for our benefit.
