The
Way, the Truth and the Life! Part
II
"I
am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through Me." John 14:6.
The focus
of this meditation is on "Truth" as it is in Jesus,
"the way, the truth, and the life."
After
Jesus was arrested in Gethsemane, the following morning he
was brought to Pilate, the Roman governor. After examining
Jesus, Pilate told the Jewish leaders to take Jesus and judge
him according to their own laws.
The Jews
answered Pilate, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone
to death."
"Then
Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said
to Him. 'Are you the King of the Jews?'
"Jesus
answered, 'My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom
were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should
not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from
here.'
"Pilate
therefore said to Him, 'Are You a king then?'
"Jesus
answered, 'You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause
I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world,
that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of
the truth hears My voice." John 18:37.
"Pilate
said to Him, 'What is truth? And when he had said this, he
went out again to the Jews, and said to them, 'I find no fault
in Him at all.'" John 18:31-38.
Pilate
didn't wait for an answer to his own question, "What
is truth? Jesus said it very plainly to Pilate, "I have
come into the world that I should bear witness to the truth.
Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
In their
blindness, the Jewish leaders who brought Jesus to Pilate
did not see the murderous hatred that defiled their own hearts.
They did not see that in rejecting Christ, the real Passover
lamb, the great feast they were about to celebrate would lose
its significance for them. However, for those who put their
faith and trust in God, they will be saved from the final
destruction at the end of this world as the first born sons
of faithful Israelites were saved from the destroying angle
who struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt who were
not protected by the blood of the Passover lamb (Exodus 12:21-29).
The truth
is that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is the only antidote
for sin. The blood of Jesus is the only remedy available to
us to counteract the effects of the poison of sin in our lives
as the blood on the door posts of Israelite dwellings spared
the first born within.
God,
the Father, sent Jesus to teach us the way of life, including
everlasting life. You and I had no choice about being born
into this life. However, we do have a choice about the future,
and whether or not we want to accept what the Lord of the
Universe has to offer those who put their faith and trust
in the provisions He has made for them.
John
states this choice succinctly and beautifully, "He was
in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the
world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did
not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave
the right to become children of God, to those who believe
in Him, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the
flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" John 1:10-13.
This experience of new birth is more fully explained in John
3:1-21.
Here
are just a few more lessons of Truth that Jesus came to share
with us:
"God
was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself" 2 Corinthians
5:19.
"He
(Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over
all creation" Colossians 1:15.
It is
Jesus who reveals the Father to the human race. If you want
to know what God is like, you may see Him in the life of Jesus.
He is One with the Father. He has made Himself to be one with
us, so that we may be made like Him. "For He (God) made
Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might
become the righteousness of God in Him" 2 Corinthians
5:21.
"If
you abide in My word, you are My disciples, and you shall
know the truth and the truth shall make you free" John
8:31, 32.
