The Light of the World!

"Then Jesus said to them, 'I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life'" John 8:12.

Jesus is the Light of the world, the Light from above that has been shared with the children of Adam and Eve from the beginning. He has shared His Light with men and women throughout the ages and especially in the Old and New Testaments. He is the Light of life!

The Light from Jesus is different from the light of the sun. However the light of the sun provides an analogy to the Light of the Son. The light of the sun, which the Son created, lights up the day. In the absence of the sun there is the darkness of night. If it were not for the moon that reflects the light of the sun back to us in the middle of the night, there would be total darkness other than the light of stars in the universe. Man made lights help disperse the darkness of night, but not Spiritual darkness. Spiritual darkness can only be penetrated by the Light of the Son and by His reflected Light in the lives of God's children.

In the darkness of night, God has provided lights in the heavens to guide us. However, we need to learn the significance of the lights in the heavens, like the North star and the Southern cross, to guide us into safe havens or places of safety. Likewise, in Spiritual darkness, God has provided Spiritual lights to help penetrate the darkness of the world about us.

When men and women follow the Light from above, they reflect the Light of the world that Jesus and God have shared with them to their families, friends and neighbors; much like the moon and stars reflect the light of the sun.

John, Christ's disciple, testified of this Light, "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life-- the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us-- that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

"This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin" 1 John 1:1-7.

What a message. When we walk in the Light that comes from God, the blood of Christ's sacrifice cleanses us from all our sins. When we ignore the Light from God, we are blinded by the darkness and confusion in the world. God's message to us is to come out of the confusion and darkness in the world. John relayed this message to us from Jesus in the Revelation, "Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues" Revelation 18:4. Our only safety is to walk in the Light that comes from God.

John shares some cautions to guide us to this Light, "Men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen" John 3:19-21.

For men and women who want to know the truth of God, He provides "the true Light which gives light to every man and woman coming into the world" John 1:9.

Solomon compares the Light of life to the shining sun, "The path of the just is like the shining sun that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them to stumble" Proverbs 4:18, 19.

Isaiah said it very well, "Come and let us walk in the Light of the Lord!" Isaiah 2:5.
